Blaugust 05: RSS, site assets, and my new gallery!

This was supposed to be quick, but I got yapping syndrome. You should follow the RSS feed for this blog :P since I just found it.

RSS

I figured out how to find the RSS feeds for dokuwiki, so I edited yesterday's blog post with that information :D I also saw that Becky uses a different blogging software for her site than zonelets, so I added that info in there too!

I'm currently using Inoreader as a RSS reader. I'm sure there's other options out there…Becky's rss guide recommended rssguard and feedbro for desktop. Honestly I wouldn't mind if it integrated with my email somehow? But I'm using 😱gmail lmao. I know Thunderbird has an RSS reader, but the last time I tried to use Thunderbird it lagged the hell out of my computer, I guess because I use my email to send 5mb jpgs for commissions. I can try it again!

Blaugust is a good time to find more RSS feeds to fill up my reader! I honestly only followed a couple of webcomics like Nero's Ultraviolents, or my own various RSS feeds to see if they worked (scumsuck art, fujofans updates, just gorly things…). So yeah. Drop a link to your own RSS feed here if you got one!

I'm one of those people whose disordered reading makes it VERY hard to manually type an RSS feed that verifies and works. I always mis-spell something, or forget a bracket, or don't have the date right. So I'm very glad that Dokuwiki can generate an RSS feed for me!!!

Art n buttons for sites

I drew a couple new things for the front page of my main site:

I was also looking through some of my older assets I made for my Green Goblin shrine

They're based off the Mabsland web ratings. Please feel free to use my illustrations and buttons on my Goblin hole for your own site, if the Goblin speaks to you. I'm sure it's very relatable and relevant to many people other than myself, to have a big booby Goblin guarding their site from children :P

I really like drawing assets for my web sites. It fulfills a multimedia art need within me. And I can actually keep them simple since they're gonna be shrunk to small size most of the time!

I also think it's a REALLY good idea to just talk about your old art! Social media brain got us constantly posting with new stuff, but what if we also boosted our old shit and got people to look at it more than once? I like some of the old stuff I've done. I like reusing my old stuff, hell the background for this wiki's light mode is a painting I did for some Spongebob gijinka art a while back. You know what? I'm gonna repost those spongebob Gijinka again on socmed! They deserve a second look!

Booru

My wonderful amazing e-lord Kat is helping me host a booru! Please visit it at archive.scumsuck.com. I'm still uploading art to it, but I'm having a lot of fun figuring out relevant tags I use often.. like “guro” + “still_alive”.

BY THE WAY you should 100000% toss a dollar to Kat on patreon or kofi, at that in turn helps support her AND me in our independent web journeys :D Hell, maybe if you message her, she can help you with self-hosting stuff too! She's the one who suggested that I use Dokuwiki since it's easy for her to set-up.

Back to the booru! For those fortunate enough to not have been channers in their teen years, a “booru” is the Japanese pronunciation of “board”, and is used for image board galleries that use meticulous tagging for organization. Think about how useful AO3-like tags are - then think about how wonderful those would be for visual art!

Most existing boorus are weeby and tend on the male-gaze-gooner side, like gelbooru and r34. They tag for characters, series, artist, kinks, and even relatively small things like eye color or facial expression! But noticeably, a lot of them don't tag for pairings! So I'd like to inject my own fujo spin on my booru, and tag, for example, my OC ships, or my TF2 ship that turned into my OC ship LMAO.

I'm also thinking about using the -booru for commission examples. So that's why you'll see ridiculously specific medium tagging, like traditional ink with digital color. I almost never update my commission examples on my main site because it takes so long for me to manually upload images to my images folder, then type the URLs in the <img> tags, then copy paste those, then write alt-text. So having a public booru would REALLY help me keep my online gallery up-to-date, and even h help me keep alt text on these images ready for copy/pasting? I can paste the alt text in the image description on each booru page, and copy that when I need it. Because for some reason images don't come with alt text meta already :P

A fun integration I'm thinking about my booru with my wiki, is using this wiki to describe what the tag is used for. Ya see those question marks on the left of the tag names? I've set it up so they link to a page on my wiki, which I can then create and write up.

The use case in my case, is to clarify the usage. Some people still use Yaoi or Yuri to mean ONLY EXPLICIT GAY SEX, ya know? But I use both words for SFW and NSFW stuff. So you can peep my own definition of yaoi and yuri in my art, and I can go autistic mode on overexplaining myself and linking to my other brain thoughts already on this wiki, AS WELL as putting citations in my text!! Wow!

A couple of things I immediately want to fiddle with is the mobile styling for the wiki. I see other people's implementation of Shimmie1) looking fine on mobile.. while mine is all zoomed out with tiny text. It's missing something simple in the header for initial viewport size or something. I can fix that.

Also I have to enable anonymous comments. Remind me to poke my e-lord about that later.

But yeah. YIPPEE! I've always dreamed of having a -booru.. and now I do!

The end

That's all for now. I'm really hyped on doing DIY clown core signage for our caricature booth at Slutfest now that we're the official caricaturist! And I really have to lock in and finish a bunch of commissions and sticker club stuff before that happens.

congrats on being the OFFICIAL caricaturist at slutfest! id love to see what u make for your clowny setup! 🤡

is there a way to integrate ur booru with ur website to replace the gallery? would u even wanna do that, or do u plan to keep ur gallery separate? just curious cause it's really cool to see your own space for that! im a tagging ho, so seeing under the hood for how things are setup for it is really cool

I just managed to find my own rss feed, and put it in the footer so it's more visible. Most feed readers will parse any url to try to find any related feeds, but it saves time. I'm self-hosting for rss but I'm not super enthusiastic about it and actually tomorrow's post is all about software anyway. I love the idea of using a booru for a personal art archive, they're really easy to sort and navigate. You can just hotlink whatever image you want in the wiki from your own booru and bypass the wiki image storage if it's annoying.

Yay! RSS! I just switched to Thunderbird recently and had no idea it had an RSS reader. I've been using Commafeed because I found it on a giant list a while ago and wanted something I could access on my phone (which I, of course, now barely access on my phone 😅). Immediately exported my feeds to Thunderbird. Commafeed isn't bad, but it'll be easier to have that all in one place.

Your booru is really cool! I'm a little jealous…
