Organizing art online
copy/pasted from blorbo so I can ruminate on this more and do it since I put it on here so everyone can read it.
I really want to reorganize my personal art page:
My order of command is:
- Medium
- ex: comics, animation, illustration, sculture
- Project
- ex: “sketches, concepts, and finished products for a album cover” vs “production art + storyboards for an animation”
I think it's important for me to highlight individual projects and have people look at them as One Thing, rather than an endless jizzblast of social media posts once every week. See how much work you put into this one thing!
Fanwork
For fanwork and OCS, it's:
- Series
- Pairing
- (solo) Character
- Gen
I've been collecting my Dale/John (with sometimes Nancy) art in one series https://archiveofourown.org/works/69622056/chapters/180601286
And I thought it'd be better organization to have Nancy/Dale and Nancy/John in its own series https://archiveofourown.org/works/71949551
It's kinda funny that they're cheating on each other in different series :P
Thought process:
1. Organize by pairing first if applicable. In my head, I know there's some people who ONLY want to see an OTP:true, and can't stand seeing those characters with other pairings. Especially when one is “canon” and the other is just fan pairings, there's a dynamic that leads into…
2. The secondary organization of yaoi/yuri sexo vs ostensibly straight looking F/M. I myself am not usually in the mood for F/M because that's usually the “canon” ships which you see all the time in the source material and in fanwork.
3. If no pairing, then organize by character. If I don't have just one character that I'm drawing over and over, then just organize in one series folder.
There's something to think about when posting a series on ao3 I guess about adding tags after the initial post? People get mad when you change course midway :P I don't really care about people being mad at fake cartoons doing things they didn't think they'd do, BUT I do want to thoughtful for people like me who have severe allergies to certain configurations.
That's where author's notes come in handy, and adding a tag for “additional warnings in author's notes” or w/e is useful. Yeah some people don't read them on a site meant for reading, but I don't really need to care about people who don't read on the reading site.
Tags and warnings
But there's still some stuff I would rather not add after the fact, which is sudden violence/gore or other “need to warn” things LMAO like if you were looking at a series that's just vanilla handholding and then the next chapter is gore COCKS IN HOLES it's like.. nah man. No spongebob closeups of finger nail torture!!
And in that case I'd split into another series, which would be [pairing] + the stinky stuff, so people can opt into the stinky stuff. I kinda did that with my scoutspy, I have one for gen kissing and one for 18+ sexo violence. I draw quite a bit of guro, so I mix that in with the regular yaoi sexo cuz you'll have to deal with that being my fetish.
For my current KOTH stuff, even with the yaoi sexo, guro doesn't really fit in. So when/if I end up drawing Dale chopping off his weenie or John getting cockroch eggs in his ass, that will be in a new series/folder. Esp if I upload that to the fudgecak art folders..
Fudgecak
For Fudgecak, I have general art going on:
https://fudgecak.scumsuck.com/art/
I think I'd like to make /ppart and /guro as their own galleries?
This goes back to how “dead dove” as an umbrella phrase for “all kinky shit” isn't that useful for general tagging in my cases… There's a lot of people who are ok with gore but don't want to see bbpslps. And then those who love bbpslps but think incest is gross. And then people who are fluffy incest freaks but hate like.. major character death. LMAO
Guro as in GROTESQUE is much more useful for my own situation. It's not always gore, sometimes it's bugs, sometimes it's cannibalism sometimes it's dad in the dog crate peeing himself. I know even guro heads have different tastes - like some people like POOP GURO only and don't like blood as a bodily fluid. But that's what works for my own art, since I don't draw poop.
Organize for myself first and foremost, because that's how I view art. Gen, 18+, and GROTESQUE.
