It's cool to see an SSG template geared toward comics! I had a lot of trouble finding anything that wasn't just for blogs when I looked for SSG templates during my brief attempt to try one.
I agree with the concerns about portability with SSGs. I find it pretty difficult to learn things if they don't work in a way that clicks with my brain, so I might just be misunderstanding things, but if 11ty or Hugo (or something they rely on) falls apart, what are people gonna do? They'd have to remake the templates at the very least.
I also like to change what parameters I include in my templates a lot, so I worry that having everything in separate files would mean I'd still have to edit them all by hand if I wanted list favorite colors on half of my characters' pages or whatever if I already made them. At least with a giant slab of JSON, they're all in one place, so everything is one copy & paste spree away from being updated.
I have to check out your deploy to Neocities tutorial when I'm in the headspace to tackle it. It's very concise and already easier to understand than other tutorials I looked at. I've had git on my computer for a while (was using it to track *when* I uploaded files to my site + what I changed when I did, since half of my stuff is drafts or incomplete rn so I can't just drop the whole thing in) but I haven't really done much with it, so that might provide me a reason to learn more about it.
I also like yapping! If you couldn't tell from the length of this comment… :'D
Ooo I've been wondering about 11ty/SSGs myself but theyre still a bit too out of my knowledge… It's great seeing how you approached it from a webcomic angle!
And the amount of people who edit and don't backup their site on neocities/nekoweb… You can download vscode or notepad+!!! 😭😭 Life could be easy!!!
99% of the SSG templates I've seen are for writers or blogs, so it's cool to see one specifically geared for visual artists! In both implementation and the tutorial language.
A lot of people are stubborn or fatigued and don't wanna do new things when they have their own groove settled, even if it would benefit them :p that's why there's still people on twitter 😭
