I had some very negative interactions on Mastodon the last week! And I think it's easy to base it on the Mastodon culture of middle class white nerds. But honestly, I have gotten worse heat from twitter, bsky, tumblr, instagram… Basically every other social media.

I wasn’t too familiar with the Da Vinki twins and didn’t get what the fuss was about until I looked at how politely they interact with fans. They’re actually very sweet! It’s been fun watching them be wholesome, goofy guys just for the sake of being wholesome and goofy.
I’ve been on most of those SNS’s (except TikTok, I tried the app once for like…15 minutes and came away really disoriented lol), and all of your assessments are depressingly accurate. I’ve had a BlueSky account for over two years, and genuinely miss the earlier days, when some users at least kinda-sorta *tried* to break toxic Twitter/X habits to some extent. Still, even then, I can recall earlier behavioral + technical issues being unaddressed that only got worse from where it started (e.g. weaponized, 100% public blocklists).
Also, I had no idea you could block entire Fedi server as an individual user! :O I knew server mods/admins could do so, but that sounds super useful if you don’t want certain subcultures interacting with you or your posts.
I totally didn't get the Da Vinkis until I just watched a whole bunch of videos and realized that their gimmick was like… not being mean?! Which is so rare nowadays! Especially combined with how toxic wrestling fans and entertainers can be haha.
The thing about social media is that there's always a critical mass you can hit before it gets super toxic and disorganized – you can even see that with some larger Mastodon servers with 10k+ people. But some people don't want to use a small (less toxic) site, and only gravitate to larger sites. Which then just makes a weird cycling problem of large social media being large just because it's already large. And small socmeds staying kinda hidden despite people wishing there were accessible alternatives. For better or worse!
Oh I love blocking entire servers as a user! Sometimes you don't want the huge normie servers to see your weird yaoi. And sometimes you see a couple of people in a 5-person server that kinda annoy you. That fine-tuned blockability is cool. Just imagining the chaos that would cause on another soc-med… imagine blocking everyone in a single tag or community on tumblr haaha

We thought they were SO annoying at first, but then their annoying-ness became endearing because it's a nice reliable thing comfort to see them jump around with their hands up going HAHAHA!
