+parallel to butch-femme lesbian relationships in the west, (including the Toms sometimes getting hormones/surgery while still not identifying as trans men) but not quite!  Here's a little reading with how language and culture differs ever so much so that the words don't quite match up:

+And it's spread through a lot of other areas of Asia - I know there are Chinese, Hong Kong, and Ugyhur people who identify with these terms/roles.
+I think for people who grew up with more gay people around them IRL this is helpful...  and I think for my group of fujos, we found the term "fujoshi" useful because we were relatively isolated from a gay community but found what we were looking for with yaoi and other fu"joshi" and now not-quite-joshi online!
