Blaugust 10: Convention setup

I'm cope-maxxing with the fact that our canopy broke in the middle of the night because of surprise rain. So I'll talk about the set-up we're trying to do this weekend for Slutfest.

Sketches

The organizer said they wanted a carnival vibe, and I know there's going to be facepainting and clowns. We're going to be doing caricatures, so I want to refocus our table and space on the live drawing aspect.

Here's my first idea, after Shane said to clear my mind of what we have, and just imagine what I'd want a carnival booth to look like.

I like red/white stripes a lot! I want most of the space to be used for people sitting, and me drawing, so people can see and be like POG let's go there.

I was thinking of example drawings hanging from the ceiling, or attached to a gridwall to stand up. But we can also put those on the front of our table facing the walkway.

Second round, focusing on the signs. Main one is on the canopy top, I want it to be tall so people can see it from a distance, above the other tents. And then some signs on street level for people who are closer.

That's the clown idea I drew, Shane made him into a rock n' roll clown with the wig. I'm in the progress of painting it on cardboard, then cutting it out and using the other wings of the cardboard to say “caricatures” and “curios”. Remind me to make a sign for “$10 each person, done in 10 minutes” or something like that.

Here's our canopy before the rain DESTROYED EVERYTHING WE KNOW AND LOVE. It doesn't surprise me cuz this has happened before to similar canopies we had for lawnmowers and such. I guess for at-home, we should get a static shed that will withstand the rain. But for mobile events like this, we just gotta cope-maxx.

But yeah, I thrifted an office easel meant for meetings, we figured out how to use a hole punch to get stuff to hang in it, and this clearance sketch pad is a good size for drawing. Now gotta see if the plastic bags we thrifted fit these papers. Using the 6ft table we've been using this year for all our events, gonna get that red tablecloth that we also thrifted, and figure out how to arrange ourselves so Shane looks like the cashier people go to. And people can also check out with some zines or prints after their drawing :)

The thrift store is REALLY good for these random office supplies, though of course the randomness means it's not reliable. Who would give away perfectly good 11×14 manilla envelopes?? 100 for $5 instead of $50 online? I'll take it.

Cumclusion

Going to buy aluminum repair parts for our canopy today. Gotta make a special sticker for slutfest, like “i got drawn like a french girl at SLUTFEST!” and it has 10% off my store or something.
